With his HYROX competition now just weeks away, our sponsored athlete Liam is deep into the final stretch of preparation, and that’s exactly when the right support matters most. At ESP Physio, that means proactively keeping the body performing at its best in the run-up to competition, not waiting for a problem to appear. That approach was on full display recently, when Liam came into the clinic for a maintenance appointment ahead of race day.
A Day in the Clinic with Liam

Liam is one of our sponsored HYROX athletes, and with competition now only a few weeks out, sessions like this take on extra importance. Rather than waiting for a niggle to become a problem, appointments in this final stretch are built around fine-tuning and staying ahead of it.
During his appointment, Liam had soft tissue work carried out to help manage muscle tension, support recovery, and keep his body moving as efficiently as possible under the demands of HYROX training. Soft tissue therapy plays an important role for athletes in high-intensity, repetitive-load sports, it helps reduce tightness, improve mobility, and lower the risk of the kind of small issues that can snowball into bigger ones if left unchecked.
Testing for Asymmetries and Imbalances
Alongside the soft tissue work, Liam was also put through testing using our VALD technology, used to assess for any asymmetries or muscle imbalances that could affect his performance.
This is a key part of how we support competitive athletes. Rather than relying on how something feels, VALD testing gives us objective, measurable data on strength, balance, and movement quality, including any differences between the left and right sides of the body. For athletes competing in demanding, multi-discipline events like HYROX, even small imbalances can affect efficiency, increase injury risk, or limit performance under fatigue.
By identifying these issues early, we’re able to build a clear picture of exactly where Liam’s training and recovery should be focused in the lead-up to competition, rather than guessing.
Why This Matters in the Final Weeks
With Liam’s HYROX competition now only a few weeks away, appointments like this are about fine-tuning, not fixing something that’s gone wrong. The combination of hands-on soft tissue work and data-driven testing means we can:
- Catch small imbalances before they become performance-limiting or injury-causing
- Guide training load with real data, rather than assumption
- Support faster, more targeted recovery between training sessions
- Help ensure Liam is peaking at the right time, not overreaching or under-prepared
This is the same evidence-based approach we bring to all of our athletes, whether they’re preparing for a competition, managing an ongoing training load, or simply looking to move and perform better day to day.

Follow the Journey
We’ll be continuing to work with Liam right up to race day, and documenting the process along the way as the countdown continues.
