Lower Back Pain: Understanding Mechanical Low Back Pain

Struggling with recurring low back pain? Mechanical low back pain is one of the most common problems we see at ESP Physio. It often feels like a dull ache across the lower back—typically worse with bending, lifting or prolonged sitting—and often eases with gentle movement and rest. The good news: in most cases it isn’t caused by anything serious and responds very well to the right advice, movement and exercise.

What is mechanical low back pain?

Mechanical low back pain usually comes from the way the joints, muscles and tissues in your lower back are moving and loading day-to-day. It can be linked to posture, repetitive tasks, prolonged sitting, lifting habits, or reduced strength and mobility.

Why it feels worse at certain times

Many people notice stiffness first thing in the morning or after sitting. This is common and often improves as you gently move and “warm up” the area.

Why movement helps

Gentle movement improves circulation, reduces stiffness, and helps restore confidence in everyday activities—especially when paired with the right exercise plan.

Typical signs and symptoms

  • Pain mainly in the lower back Sometimes it can refer into the buttocks or thighs.
  • Stiffness after sitting or in the morning Often eases as you start moving.
  • Pain increases with certain movements Bending, lifting, twisting, or long drives can aggravate symptoms.
  • Relief with position changes Walking, gentle movement, or simply changing posture can help settle symptoms.
